LAYOUT

Below is a collection of printed layout work that explores the ongoing themes of my practice.

Being told my whole life that I am a Luso-American has recently lead me to really dive in to exploring what that means to me, and how it has influenced my visual storytelling.

Luso-American History a Survey 1634-2023, by Stephen Alves Medeiros, Book sleeve, 7" x 10"
There are currently no history books specifically addressing Luso-American History. This project is a concept I wanted to explore as a means of understanding what visual story could be told here as an introduction to a timeline in history that I am directly connected to.

Fado Português, by Amalia Rodrigues, Vinyl album cover/label, 12.375" x 12.375"
Fado is very traditional and dramatic genre of Portuguese music. It is often sung by a soloist and plays in the soundscape of an emotional longing or heartache. This piece is a reimagined look for the album “Fado Português” by Amalia Rodrigues. The moodiness and elegance of fado is portrayed through the use of metallic watercolors that appear to weep existing in an atmosphere of deep earthy colors, giving your heart and mind a glimpse of what to expect when the music starts to play.

The Graduate Magazine, Magazine, 8.5" x 11"
I created this magazine using data from the 2020 census of Portugal. The Graduate Magazine highlights education statistics from mainland Portugal. The 20-page magazine is a showcase of playful infographics and colors that brings the statistics to life. The last spread of the magazine is a bird’s eye view of all the statistics showcased throughout the magazine. They are broken down by gender as recorded in the census, and culminate in a dramatic comparison to the education statistics on the Azores Islands.

The Lavender Purpose Project, Hard Cover Book, 7.5" x 7.5"
This book serves a dual purpose. First and foremost, it documents my partnership with Project Sanctuary through a proposal I submitted through my agency of employment, Patients & Purpose. Each year Patients & Purpose reviews proposals for volunteer efforts of their employees through an initiative it began called The Lavender Purpose Project. In 2020 my proposal was accepted. The agency awarded me a total of $10,000 to bring my proposal to life. I chose to work with Project Sanctuary, a Denver Colorado based non-profit that focuses on suicide prevention of military vets and their families. The original plan to go out there in person had to shift with the rise of the pandemic so we decided to create care packages geared towards the vets and their families on Project Sanctuary retreats. We also created 250 care packages that were sent to military training camps to bring them awareness of Project Sanctuary’s work in case they ever found themselves in a situation where they need the assistance of the professionals at Project Sanctuary. Our efforts reached over 400 individuals dealing with suicide prevention as well as families that needed assistance reconnecting with their loved ones that now felt hopeless after serving our country. The second purpose of this book focuses on the font I created out of the lotus flower graphic that is part of The Lavender Purpose Project logo. The font weaves in and out of my story while showcasing letterforms to emphasize words that define The Lavender Purpose Project.
