The posters seen here capture my responses to Luso-American themes relating to traditions, culture, religion, self-identity, and outreach. My practice has brought me to exploring these topics and how they relate to my lived experience.

What does it mean to identify as a Luso-American? In it’s purest definition, a Luso-American is a citizen or resident of the United States who is connected to the country of Portugal by birth, ancestry, or citizenship. This poster is a reflection of my lived experience coming to terms with what being Luso-American means to me.

A familiar story to those of us who grew up in poor immigrant families. Having chores was an expectation with no allowance. Being constantly reminded that the chores we are asked to do as a child are for the family and menial in comparison to the hardships our parents had to endure just to have access to basic necessities like food.

Traditional dances are the core of many cultures. The visual in this poster is an attempt to examine patterns of movement across cultures that have a common root. Both the Azores and Mozambique speak Portuguese as their primary language. With each having unique traditional dances within their cultures, do the patterns of movement speak a similar language? While the expressions the dancers make above ground are vastly different, do the impressions their feet leave on the ground speak a common graphic visual language?

EMBRACE, Digital Print, 24" x 36" EMBRACE is a typographic response exploring the duality of the English and Portuguese languages. Abraçar is the Portuguese word for “embrace”. Both words are 7 characters long and share the common root “brac”. Both are a universal language of love in action. When words fail us, sometimes an embrace is all that is needed to show a sign of support, heal a pain, or simply make someone feel human again.

HELPLINE is a resource poster created as an outreach to any individual who may find themselves in a tough situation where they may be a harm to themselves. It is a concept piece created as a collaboration between Sticky Hearts Collaborative (see Systems) and the suicide prevention non-profit organization, To Write Love On Her Arms.
